Sometimes I'm amazed.
I'm amazed at how far the weight loss industry will stoop to make a buck. I saw this infomercial on TV the other night advertising their super-duper ab workout thingy that is guaranteed to melt belly fat.
The sad thing is that many people believe their rubbish and will buy their product.
Nothing Complicated About It 

Despite what you might have heard on one of these programs or read in magazines, losing belly fat is incredibly simple. It's not mysterious or glamorous. You don't need to do any specific sets of exercises or workout routines. There is no special belly fat diet.
Here's the incredibly simple formula for losing belly fat: Burn off more calories than you eat.
The Truth Is Dull 
That's it. I told you it was not pretty or dramatic. But it's the truth. If you consistently take in fewer calories than you burn off, you will lose belly fat, as sure as the sun rises in the east.
But how do you burn off more calories than you consume? Well, firstly, you've got to know how many calories you burn. You can do that by doing an online search for a calorie calculator.
A good one will have you enter information like your age, bodyweight, height, and activity level. Then it will give you an approximate number of calories your body burns while at rest. This is the number of calories you need to eat each day to maintain your current bodyweight.
To lose weight, simply subtract about 500 calories from that number, and eat that many calories every day. Doesn't sound very complicated, does it? But there's more.
What About Exercise? 

"But don't you have to exercise to lose belly fat?" I get asked this question a lot, and the answer is no, but it can speed up the process.
For example, while fat tissue just sits there looking ugly, muscle tissue is constantly burning fuel. What does it burn for fuel? Fat tissue. So, the more muscle you have, the more fat you burn.
So, if you workout to build muscle, you're also burning fat in the process. This can be done by lifting weights, doing bodyweight exercises, or any activity that puts stress on your muscles.
How Important Is Cardio? 

The common misconception out there today is that cardio, or aerobic, exercise is the best way to burn fat. While cardio does burn some fat, it also burns muscle tissue. You don't want that.
A better, more efficient alternative to cardio is interval training. Interval training, or HIIT, is where you exercise at an intense level, then rest for a period, then exercise intensely again.
Interval training actually builds muscle while burning fat. This is exactly what you want.
