Everyone wants to age gracefully, but that isn't always easy. Getting old can be a tough job, and it is one you do not get a vacation from. Still, there are ways to lessen the effects of the aging process and keep yourself healthy, even as the years roll on.

You should worry about more important things as you age and less about numbers. It is simple to focus on your age, especially as it increases, or even worse the amount you weigh. While it's important to know your weight to keep in control, it's more important to focus on how you feel and not what preconceived notions tell you a person your age should feel like. You pay your doctor to worry about your numbers, so throw them out of your mind and focus on things that are more fun instead.

Having close relationships as you age is important. Being an active community member has been shown to extend a person's lifespan and keep them healthier. Focusing on those who you can emotionally depend on is the best part of social interactions.

A balanced, healthy diet is critical as you get older. Fiber, whole grans, fruits and vegetables that are low in cholesterol, saturated fats and trans fats are essential to a healthy diet. Your body will thrive on the essential nutrients that this diet provides.

Always make certain you are receiving the appropriate rest for your age bracket. Sleeping 7 to 9 hours every night is the best way to maintain a good hormone balance. Not getting enough sleep can often result in irritability and can generally put you in a bad mood.

Do not use powder or foundation if you want to improve the look of your skin as you get older. This is extremely important to aging skin which needs extra hydration. Include more simpler beauty techniques into your lifestyle such as using cosmetics like lip gloss, eyeliner and mascara.

To feel better about growing older, come up with a new hobby or return to an old one to keep you busy during retirement. Since you will have more time, you can turn your focus to an activity you may have not had time for prior to retirement or your children moving out. Having hobbies keep you motivated and active and also get you out of your home.

Exercise a little bit more each day. As you age, the muscles need even more activity to stay strong and tight. You should at least take 5 days out of every week to go on a thirty minute walk. Switch it up with strength workouts twice a week. This will keep your body in shape and will help stave off some of the physical effects of getting older.

Take time to enjoy living. Much like you did with your children, it is important to set goals and benchmarks as you age. When you are able to meet these milestones, such as meeting your retirement account objectives, you will get the same sense of satisfaction you did with your children.

It's important that you monitor your blood pressure. It is possible to have high blood pressure and not know it. It is sometimes known as "the silent killer" due to the lack of symptoms experienced by many people before an attack. Age will cause your cardiovascular system to slowly deteriorate, so it's important to monitor these changes as you get older. Therefore, should a problem arise, you can attend to it immediately.

Don't forget to drink enough water. As you grow older it is important to stay hydrated and drink lots of water; 8-10 glasses daily.

Do not fall. Senior citizens who suffer a fall are at high risk for injury, bone fractures, or even death. Walking for thirty minutes, three times weekly aids your balance, while maintaining your physical and mental fitness. To reduce the chance of fractures, increase your bone density by combining weight training, calcium and vitamin D.

One way to help prevent heart disease is to eat more fish. The cholesterol in red meat can clog your arteries. Fish is full of healthy fats which are believed to slow down the clogging and help you to live a long, healthy life.
