General Information On The Best Snorkel Gear

By Andrea Davidson

Individuals who plan to go snorkeling may be looking for the best snorkel gear. This activity involves swimming through or on a body of water. People who do this are equipped with a diving mask that has a shaped tube called a snorkel, and fins for the feet. In cool waters, wetsuits may be worn. Use of this gear allows the swimmer to observe attractions underwater for long periods of time with little effort.

This is considered a popular activity for recreation purposes, particularly in scuba diving and resort locations. This is appealing to so many because it gives them a first-hand look at life that exists underwater. Furthermore, it can be done without extensive training or elaborate equipment, such as that required by scuba divers. It is an activity that all ages enjoy because it does not require much work or effort.

Scuba divers might also do snorkeling when they are on the surface. Search and rescue teams have been known to do this for water searches. This is also employed for athletes who participate in underwater versions of sports, such as hockey, spearfishing and rugby. This activity is thought to be centuries old, as Aristotle mentions a similar practice in a written work.

Not very much equipment is needed to do this activity. Still, one of the major pieces requires is, of course, the snorkel. These units are tubes that typically have a inside diameter that is between 1 and 3 centimeters, and a length of 30 centimeters. Most are shaped like a J or an L, and include a rubber or plastic mouthpiece at their lower end.

This piece is designed to allow a person to breath air even when his or her nose and mouth is submerged underwater. Typically these have a rubber piece that is used to attached the snorkel to the diving mask. The optimum length for such pieces is 40 centimeters, or 16 inches. Long tubes do not make it easier to breath while deeper because the lungs still struggle, as they have to inhale against a higher pressure.

Dive masks may also be needed, and are the style of masks used by scuba divers. They allow wearers to see underwater. These units may differ in size, style and shape. Most are made using rubber or silicone materials. Fins and wet suits are optional but are known to make swimming easier.

A lot of places that sell this gear have trained staff who can help people locate what items work for them. Facilities that offer snorkeling classes or sessions usually have rental equipment available. Before snorkeling, people will be given information regarding how to properly use the gear and other safety precautions. Generally, this activity is not ideal for people who are uncomfortable when it comes to swimming, unless snorkeling is done in very shallow waters.

The best snorkel gear is that which fits and is used correctly. Not much equipment or training is necessary for this activity, and the essentials are diving masks and snorkel. Wetsuits and fins are optional pieces of gear that may be employed for comfort or convenience purposes.
