Microdermabrasion - a Non Invasive Solution

By Mats Sumellin

Microdermabrasion is a skin enhancement procedure that is becoming more well known over time. This noninvasive treatment is painless, and most of all, affordable. Those who would like some skin enhancement but lasers, injections or other cosmetic procedures are worrisome, it is a good option.

There is a lot that microdermabrasion can do, including lessening the appearance of age spots (hyperpigmentation), reduce scars, even out rough skin, make pores smaller, and lessen wrinkles and lines on the face. Collagen growth will be stimulated as skin creams can permeate deeper, and this will be something that makes the skin look brighter and more radiant.

Skin is exfoliated using specially designed equipment for the microdermabrasion process. Dead skin on the surface is removed using this procedure.

The crystal microdermabrasion device consists of a compressor that draws in air through a hand-held wand. As the skin is touched by the wand, the result is a vacuum effect. Aluminum oxide crystals are directed across the skin's surface, picking up dead surface skin cells along the way. Another tube in the wand then vacuums up the dead skin cells and crystals.

There is also another type of microdermabrasion that uses a diamond-tip and a vacuum, but crystals are not necessary for this kind. Similarly, a vacuum is used but this time, the diamond tip does the work of dislodging the dead skin cells. There are many different tips with various grades of roughness, chosen specifically for your skin type and condition. Crystal microdermabrasion is a little more comfortable that diamond-tip, but they have the same result for the patient. It is also usually better for sensitive skin.

The skill of the treatment provider can improve upon the already significant effects of microdermabrasion. Multiple treatments are usually suggested in order to get the most from this technique, skin texture and type will determine how many are needed. Depending on the results that you want, your skin's overall condition, the issues that are present and your response to the first treatment a plan of care can be structured. Most people are very pleased with the initial results of their first treatment session, but it may take several sessions to address all of the problems and issues with your complexion. For the treatments to provide long lasting results, every few months a session should be scheduled. Individuals who happen to have very sensitive skin can also benefit from this process, as the device can be set up in order to cater toward their specific skin type.

Although microdermabrasion is an extremely popular non-surgical cosmetic treatment, it is not completely free from side effects. Basically, it's like using a sandblaster on the skin, so naturally, it will react to that temporarily. Skin sensitivity sometimes occurs, along with minimal bruising and skin can be slightly red and tight feeling. This is normal and will only last several hours. Mild abrasions sometimes occur, and at times even a bit of bleeding. Anaesthetics are not necessary with microdermabrasion, no dangerous chemicals are involved on the sensitive skin on your face, and there are minimal risks involved. This process is much easier on the skin and safer than facial peels that involve chemicals or lasers.
