Wearing The Correct Post Operative Garments

By Alison Wilcox

Most everyone knows what will be worn when they go to the hospital as a patient. It is a hospital gown, and this is one of the post operative garments worn. On the other hand, hospital staff who provide care need to wear their own uniform.

Patients will usually wear a hospital gown. This is normally a single piece of cloth which has ties either in the back. This is meant for easy access when a doctor or nurse needs to get to certain areas quickly.

Medical staff need to gain access to the patient easily, but they will still respect their privacy. These patients have just had surgery, and they need to be monitored closely. This includes close inspection of surgical wounds which can be anywhere from the abdomen, back, leg, or neck. There could be tubes placed which need to inspected as well.

Aside from needing to check on patient health and safety, the patient needs to be cleaned periodically. The gown helps do this because it allows easier access over a pair of pajamas. The patient can also lift a gown easier in the bathroom compared to pajamas. This helps, too, if the patient is experiencing pain.

Doctors and nurses have their own set of wear that they need to put on while at work. A majority of people wear something called scrubs. These are also worn post-operatively.

Medical staff worry about exposure to body fluids when they come into contact with patients. Post-surgical patients many times have tubing which is draining fluid, so there is more exposure to body fluids in these situations. Especially in the operating room, scrubs need to be worn by everyone working in there during a surgery.

If one has not heard, there are new models of hospital gowns coming out for patients. This is good news as patients have complained about the lack of privacy that exists with the older gowns. These are made of a heavier material, and they are longer. They open in the front and fasten like robe somewhat. They are much more convenient compared to the old gowns.

It is important for both patients and medical staff to have the right post operative garments when they are in the hospital. This is due to many different reasons. For patients, there are several reasons why they need proper wear in the hospital especially after surgery. It gives nurses and doctors easier access to certain things like surgical wounds and any tubing or devices that were placed during surgery. An example would be a drain, and fluid will collect into the drain. Therefore, doctors and nurses need to assess these fluids frequently. It also makes it easier for patients like when they use the restroom. There is no hassle of pants and shirts to maneuver. Scrubs are worn, too, by the medical staff because it protects them from exposure to body fluids as well. They are comfortable and easily washed for use again.
